SmartCoderSchool

HTML/CSS Games and Website Building

Age Range: 11-17 years old. Dates: July 25 -29, 2023

These are some of the projects that the students will do during the camp.

Margaret is an amazing teacher. She naturally guides and cultivates my curiosity in programming. After taking her class, I am a much better programmer and know that computer science is the field I want to enter

Michael F.
I took this coding class after school for a couple of years, and it was so much fun! At the beginning I made a page that said "Hello, world!" in six different font sizes, and by the end, I had made a variety of functional projects, like a drawing program and a word guessing game. Not only did I learn how to make specific projects in class but I learned how to turn any project idea into a working program. This was a really fun way to enter the world of coding, and I left the class excited to go farther. This past year, I helped out as a TA for this same class. It was so cool to see and help them learn and practice the same things I did a few years ago, and I could tell they had a good time and learned a ton.

Whether you are already serious about computer programming or want to try it out, you will have fun learning professional concepts and doing projects. The material has been developed and used during Seattle Country Day School programming club sessions. The camp gives students an opportunity to learn modern HTML and CSS techniques and at the end build their own website.

Students will be making Galleries, Menues, Overlaying objects, Mario and Sunrise animations, Who Is Smarter website and other projects. After they learn the new concepts of the class, students will have a lot of freedom in the implementation of their own websites.

While working on projects students will learn the following skills:

  • Creating headers, paragraphs, images and other HTML elements
  • Making emojies
  • Using box model
  • Creating forms with HTML5 controls
  • Using CSS selectors
  • Applying transitions, transformations and animatioins
  • Positioning elements using fixed, relative and absolute positions
  • Laying out elements using Flex
  • Overlaying elements by applying zIndex

All coding will be done with HTML and CSS only without any third party library. We consider this very important as it promotes deeper understanding of the techniques involved.

No previous experience with HTML/CSS is necessary.
